Gratuitous Promotion

Please click the date button to view whole post.

Hi everyone,

Today I'm doing a little gratuitous promotion. I have been lucky enough to have three of my novellas published by Pink Petal Books, and there is a fourth on the way. My first two novellas, The Trinket Seller's Daughter and Capturing Bliss are both historical romances which are set in England's medieval period. The third, Until the Stars Burn Cold is a paranormal romance which is set in ancient Persia and modern day, rural Australia. I admit, it's a bit different but it was a lot of fun to write. Misrule’s Mistress which is coming soon, is set once more back in my beloved Middle Ages. It’s a Christmas story which spans the twelve days of Christmas and ends on the Feast of Misrule.

If you have read one of my stories, I would love to hear from you.

If not, why not give one a go and check it out... go on, you know you want to! J

Lost in the tangled wood where she was attacked and her traveling party killed, Emelin finds safety in the company of Sir Allard de Gerril. But as the pair hunt the man who killed her companions, Emelin finds she wants more than companionship with the knight... she seeks his love.

To save her sister, Lady Blissot de Woodville exchanges places and marries a handsome stranger. But lies born from love have the power to destroy...

An antiques dealer gets more than she bargains for, when she discovers an ancient ring.

Thanks to everyone who has supported me and bought my books. *Mwah*

Although... they could always do with a little more love. *wink*

Misrule's Mistress is coming...

Please click date button to view entire post.
Hi everyone,
I've been writing madly and working pretty gosh darn hard lately. I am just putting the final touches to my Steampunk novella, Strange Phenomena and launched headlong into a romance novel set in the Victorian era. I'm enjoying the research in this time period and so far I've managed to bang out about 23,000 word in a two week period. Fingers crossed this surge of ideas and words on screen will continue!
My medieval Christmas novella, Misrule's Mistress is coming soon from Pink Petal Books.  I thought I would share a little snippet of Barric and Ellette's story. I hope you enjoy it!

“If I were sure that you loved me, if you would accept my offer, I would wait if I knew how long.” Barric slowly closed his fingers over the ring and let his hand fall down by his side.

“I cannot tell you, for I do not know – a year, two... or three.”

“But after all these long years, would you then marry me?”

“I do not know, Barric; I do not know what to say. I am confused and do not know what I want or feel,” she said as went to walk away but Barric caught her arm and she turned her head and looked at him.

“You kissed me back, Ellette.”

“I know, I know I did... but...”

“Then without an answer I cannot wait for you, Ellette, no matter how much I want to,” Barric said as his hand slid down her cheek. “If I cannot have you, it matters little who I take for a wife. And because of that, I vow I will be married by the Feast of Epiphany.”

Arching a brow, Ellette replied, “Are brides so easily found?”

“I want you, Ellette, but if you do not wish me for a husband and cast me aside, I will be forced to find a bride elsewhere.”

“By the end of our winter festivities?”

“Aye,” Barric said.

“I fear you have taken our games and challenges too far. For whom will you marry... the kitchen maid, or the weaver’s daughter? I am the only eligible maid at Cranley, and I say nay.”

“Mayhap, but I will be married by midnight at the feast.”

“In twelve days?” Torn and confused, Ellette stared at Barric. Part of her wanted to cry that perhaps she had been too hasty, perhaps one day, far away, she would marry him. Mixed with that, she was annoyed and hurt that he would think she was so easily replaced; and lastly, a hint of competitiveness reared its head. She almost wanted to take his challenge and wager that it would be impossible to marry in twelve days.

“Aye – I swear it,” Barric said as he turned and returned to the feast, leaving Ellette alone with her riotous thoughts.

Spotlight - Juanita Kees

Please click date button to view entire post.
Hi everyone,
Today we are lucky enough to have the wonderful Juanita Kees dropping by. Juanita is here to talk about her new book, Fly Away Peta. One lucky reader will win a pdf copy of Fly Away Peta, so please leave your name & email address to be in the draw. The comment button is located at the very end of this post. :)

Born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa and now proudly Australian, Juanita is a freelance writer of book reviews, blogs, web content, advertorials, newsletters, resumes and training manuals. Juanita is a freelance editor for US Publisher Damnation Books, and proofreads scientific text books for Elsevier Press, Oxford, UK.
Juanita escapes the real world by reading and writing romantic fiction. When she’s not writing, editing or proofreading, Juanita is the cleaning fairy and mother to three boys (hubby included, his toys are just a little more expensive). Her not-so-miniature Daschund, Sam is her critique partner and keeps her company while writing.
Hi Juanita and welcome!
Thank you so much for having me here today, Nicole. The thing I love most about Australian fiction is that we have so much material to draw from for our stories. Our history might be young but it’s rich in culture and character. There are so many places in this wonderful land of ours to write about. I’m not sure which I had more fun with: writing FLY AWAY PETA or researching the Western Australian town of Williams where it’s set.

What type of romance do you write?
Contemporary with a touch of suspense.
How do you develop your plot and characters?
I use the wonderful profiling tool from Valerie Parv’s THE ART OF ROMANCE WRITING to create their persona. Then I choose a star sign for them and build their personalities around that. Although (like real people) they do tend to develop their own personalities as the story grows!
I do a very basic event plan (again using a tool from Valerie’s book) and create a collage of places, people and scenes for visual planning. And then I let my imagination have free reign to go where it chooses with the story.
What comes first, the plot or characters?
It could be either. I might see a person in a shopping centre that strikes a chord. My mind wanders when I’m getting ready to go to work in the mornings. I’ll be standing in front of the mirror brushing my teeth and an idea will strike. Lucky I have an understanding boss, who doesn’t mind me being a little late for work!
Are you working on anything at the present?
Taming the Tiger is my current WIP which I entered into Harlequin’s So You Think You Can Write Competition
What books or authors have most influenced your own writing?
Valerie Parv – without her helpful romance writing guide, I would never have started this journey. I’m also a huge Nora Roberts fan.
What is your favourite food?
Easy…chocolate!
What made you want to be a writer?
We grew up with books and storytelling. I come from a creative family of storytellers, artists and musicians. I started out writing poetry and lyrics. I guess it was always about finding an outlet for my restless imagination.
Juanita, thanks so much for stopping by for a chat J

Fly Away Peta
The time has come to face her worst fear and the clock is ticking…
Peta Johnson will go to extreme lengths to protect her daughter Bella. When the Bella is kidnapped, the search for her takes Peta back to the small Western Australian country town of Williams, a place she’d vowed never to return to. The town where her dreams were shattered and her nightmare began. Back to the place she’d been destined to meet two very powerful, yet very different men. One would break her heart; the other would destroy her soul. Both would change her life forever.

Excerpt:

Taking a deep, steadying breath, Jaime turned back towards the girl on the stage. She wore the same little black dress she’d worn when he’d met her ten years before, he noted. It fit a little more snugly now that the slender curves had matured.  Her chestnut mane shone under the lights as she slowed the pace again. He remembered the glittering green eyes which had once seared his soul, the dusting of freckles on the pert nose he used to kiss, and the smooth, almost translucent skin on the cheeks he used to touch. Slowly he moved forward to get a closer look at the woman who had filled his dreams and thoughts constantly for as long as he could remember. He’d put it down to guilty conscience that she’d haunted him for so long because he didn’t dare consider the other option.
She sang with her soul. The song was meant for someone special. Her ex-husband perhaps, he thought with all too familiar feelings of jealousy. From this close he could see the dampness at the corners of her beautiful green eyes as she sang, pouring her heart into the performance. It was this ability to engage emotion that had kept her steady in the top ten charts.
Dear God, he’d never thought it possible she could be more beautiful than he remembered. Tightness gripped his heart painfully. He swallowed around the lump in his throat.
As he stood at the base of the stage staring up at her, she looked down at him and their eyes met and held. He heard her voice falter slightly as shock registered on her face.  She tore her eyes from his and moved away across the stage. Jaime felt his heart plummet from his chest down into his stomach. He didn’t want to feel this way! He should’ve stopped feeling this way about her after all this time. His lips tightened as he took one last look at her and strode from the hall.

Spotlight - Samantha Holt

Hi everyone,
Today I have the lovely Samantha Holt dropping by. Samantha is a multi published historical author, who deals mainly with the delicious medieval period. Samantha lives in Warwickshire, England with her twin girls, and occasionally her husband who works abroad. She admits that the lack of constant husband encourages her romantic side. Samantha loves to combine her passion for romance and history into exciting and passionate tales.

Welcome Samantha! :)

How did you come up with the idea for your story?
My ideas generally stem from one thing. For example, my One Knight series came from the idea of couples getting together in the space of one night. I didn’t have a set idea as to how or why but I knew that, however these people had met, I wanted to explore the one night that changed everything for them.

How do you develop your plot and characters?
I’m not a planner but generally before I sit down to write I have a beginning, middle and an end. But that’s only worked out in my head. Character wise, I tend to choose an idea - something that means something to them, like trust or honour - and work around that. Other than that I tend to let the characters lead me.

What comes first, the plot or characters?
It’s a real mix. With the start of the plot come the characters but I suppose the characters don’t really develop until the plot gets going. Sometimes though, the characters demand something of the plot or I find something that just wouldn’t work for them so it varies.

Are you working on anything at the present?
It’s in the very early stages at the moment but I’m working on my next full length story. It explores the idea of a relationship developing while there are communication issues and involves two very sexy brothers!

What books or authors have most influenced your own writing?
I love classics but I wouldn’t dream of comparing my writing to them. My biggest influences were probably all the Harlequin authors I read growing up and the many, many indie romance authors that I’ve read over the years since. Every romance I’ve ever enjoyed has certainly shaped my understanding of the romance genre.

How do you come up with the titles to your books?
With difficulty! Sometimes they just come to me…but rarely. I tend to have a brain storming session and usually something comes up. Often it’s something really obvious and you wonder why you didn’t think of it in the first place!

What is your favourite book?
I have many that I adore and it does tend to change frequently but my one constant love is North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell.

If you could go anywhere in the world where would it be?

I’d like to go to Malaysia. I went there as a child and adored it. I understand it’s changed a lot since (this was not far off twenty years ago) but the people were wonderful and I love their culture.

What is a talent you wish you had, but don't?
I wish I could play an instrument. I’ve got a good sense of rhythm and I tried numerous instruments as a child but never stuck with them. I wish I had now.

Are you messy or tidy?
My house is generally very tidy but it never used to be in my nature. My room at college used to have a carpet of clothes but once I had children I found it difficult to cope with a messy house. Now I can’t function if there is any mess. My husband will say I’m a little obsessive about it now.

What is your favourite food?
I dread this question because I genuinely don’t know. It really depends what mood I’m in. I like a good curry, proper English chip-shop chips, minted lamb shank and scallops.

What inspires your writing?
It’s hard to say. Certainly not my daily life! I am a huge romantic and I like to get lost in a little bubble of romance so it’s really just escapism for me. Romantic books and films certainly encourage my romantic muse and certain settings will often inspire something, a waterfall or some beautiful scenery will spark my imagination.

Are you a sweet tooth?
I love chocolate éclairs! I enjoy savoury food equally but there’s nothing quite like a nice pastry as a treat.

What made you want to be a writer?
It was an accident really. I wrote a story for myself, as a bit of a hobby really, and enjoyed doing it so much that I realised I wanted to do it all the time.

Dreams and aspirations... what’s the one thing you want to do, see or experience above all else?
One thing! That’s hard to choose. I guess really I want to watch my daughters grow and become confident, hopefully happy, young women.

Samantha, thank you so much for stopping by for a chat!

Black Knight

White Knight
On the eve of her wedding, Lady Sara makes a bid for escape, having little intention of marrying a man she's never met. But Sara's plans go awry when she ends up in the hands of a mysterious knight.

As she finds herself consumed by the fiery passion that lies between her and this mysterious man, she has little idea that it is not just his name that he is hiding from her. Her knight holds a much bigger secret, but will it tear them apart or will she forgive his deception?

Snippet: From Highland Knight

“I think we’ve got a lot to learn about each other. Will ye let me learn about ye, sweet lassie?” He drew her fingers to his lips, carefully brushing each one across his mouth.

Anna gasped at the contact and her eyes seemed bigger than ever.

“Aye,” she breathed. “I’ll let ye, Laird Sinclair.”

“Niall,” he murmured against her fingers.

“Niall,” she whispered.

His name upon her lips was the undoing of him and he practically leapt forwards, dropping her hand and pressing an urgent kiss to her lips. She cried out slightly but she didn’t push him away. Instead, Anna’s hands came around his neck, clutching to him as he pushed her back.

Her mouth came open and she returned his kiss with fire. Hell’s teeth, he’d been wrong about Mackenzie women. Anna was as warm as they come.

Darkside Down Under 2nd Anniversary Blog Hop

Please click date button to view entire post.

Hi everyone,
It’s The Dark Side Downunder 2nd Anniversary! Thanks so much for dropping by and helping us celebrate. From sexy vampires to goblin kings, through time travel, space opera, fantasy, Steampunk and everything else that goes bump in the night... the Darksiders have entangling paranormal tales to share. So raise your glass and embrace your dark side.

So... Daleks aside, what scared you as a child? For me (other than Daleks and clowns), it was some of the really dark and twisted fairytales. Some of them were blood soaked, evil and just plain awful. The murderous groom in Blue Beard was terrifying, the Goose Girl with the death of Falada made me cry, and the injustice of The Six Swans still lingers. In The Six Swans (sometimes known as the 3 Swans or the 7 Swans) the princess must endure six years of silence to break the spell that has turned her beloved brothers into swans. In that time, she is abused, loses her husband’s love, watches as her children are stolen from her and is accused of witchcraft and yet she is unable to speak and defend herself.

Another example of dark and scary images is in the old version of Cinderella. Here the step-mother encourages the step sisters to cut off their heels or toes to fit into the slipper, only to have their plan undone by the two pigeons calling to the prince “Cuckoo, Cuckoo, there’s blood on the shoe... she is not the true bride for you.” Of course, the prince heeds the bird’s warning and leaves with his true bride, Cinderella.

So...come on fess up, was there a story that scared you silly as a kid?

Long ago in ancient Persia, there lived a pair of star crossed lovers. In a desperate bid, the lovers sought to flee the town of Adwan. But they were caught and torn apart. For his insolence, Jinn is cursed into a ring. Ages pass and empires crumble... and Jinn is still forever bound in a circle of frozen silver. Bound, that is until present day antiques dealer, Mia Templeton accidentally releases him. Mia is beautiful and Jinn, finds her somehow familiar. Is love eternal and evil everlasting? Can the power that destroyed his life in Adwan, reach through the centuries and threaten his future?

He could almost taste the longing and desperation on her lips. His arms wrapped around her and pulled her close, she trembled. Her tears fell as the deepened their kiss and Jinn savoured the salt on his tongue. Reluctantly she broke away but Jinn caught hold of her hand as she took two steps down the staircase towards her uncle.

“I cannot let you go.”

“You must,” she said as she pulled her hand from his.

“He cannot Shuri,” Kansbar said as he moved towards the flight of steps. “He cannot let you go – his love is too great. Which is admirable but unfortunate. He will move the heavens to have you and that will not do. Now, come to me and we will have done with it.”

“Uncle you promised that you would not harm him!” She called out as she started to run towards him.

“I will not kill him,” Kansbar smiled at Shuri. “But I cannot simply let him go. Watch, you may enjoy it!”

“No Uncle!”

But Kansbar had already begun to mutter strange sounding words, his hands moved elegantly drawing invisible shapes before him and the glass sphere appeared to illuminate with an inner pale light.

“Kansbar sisitu emuq Adar. Kansbar sisitu emuq Jetae Shamsheara. I-n-gub-en, digir gal-gal-gu-ne-ra. I-n-dim-es-dilmun!”

The Shamsheara stone levitated in front of Kansbar and shone as bright as the sun.

“Kansbar sisitu emuq Jetae Shamsheara! I, Kansbar summon the power of the Jetae Shamsheara!”

A golden light encased Kansbar before the stone released an energy bolt of pure white light. It shot through the air as fast as lightning and hit Jinn. He cried out in pain and staggered as the light pierced his body.

Shuri ran down the remainder of the stairs and threw herself at Kansbar’s feet. She grabbed at the edge of his cloak “Please Uncle, I beg you do not do this. I will do everything you say. I will marry Farrokh. Show mercy, show mercy!” Shuri looked up and stared at Jinn, to her horror his golden skin had taken on a silver sheen.

“Shuri!” Jinn called out as he was compelled to bend forward and reach for his toes.

His eyes never left hers as she ran the few paces towards him; but she hesitated as she watched as Jinn’s entire body became pliable silver. His body had been turned to molten metal yet he was still conscious … still Jinn… still calling her name.

“Jinn!” she screamed and her eyes rounded in horror as Jinn’s body formed a never ending circle. He rocked for an agonizing moment at the top of the steps, the sunlight causing his silver body to gleam. Pitching forward Jinn rolled down the hard stone steps, decreasing in size with each revolution until he clattered and spun with a metallic clink at Kansbar feet. With a satisfied smile Kansbar bent down and scooped Jinn up with one hand. Jinn had been transformed into a heavy silver ring – a perfect circle just big enough to fit Kansbar smallest finger. Kansbar grinned as he inspected Jinn in miniature; his hands touched his feet and his head turned to one side, lips still parted with Shuri’s name. With great pleasure Kansbar held it up for all to see.

“Here my dear, allow me to be the first to present you with a wedding present.” He mocked and then laughed heartily as he watched his niece drop into a dead faint.
